Malignant mesothelioma presenting with unexplained recurrent pleurisy episodes

چکیده
Although it can remain stable for prolonged periods, malignant mesothelioma (MM) is an aggressive tumor usually associated with asbestos exposure. Herein we present a case of pleural MM characterized by recurrent exudative pleurisy. A 33-year-old male admitted to our department for four times due to recurrent right pleural effusion within 21 months. His pleurisies were subsided with or without any therapy. At his last admittance a diagnosis of malignant mesothelioma was obtained by open pleura biopsy. After six cycles of chemotherapy, he is still free of any symptoms and no recurrent pleurisy was detected. This is a rare case of malignant mesothelioma showing recurrent pleurisy episodes, and spontaneous regressions without any apparent radiological findings. Pleurisies with effusions may be due to anti-tumor immune response or a predisposing factor for the development of malignant mesothelioma. [Turk J Cancer 2006;36(3):142-145].

Asymptomatic primary tuberculous pleurisy with intense 18-fluorodeoxyglucose uptake mimicking malignant mesothelioma
BACKGROUND The pathogenesis of primary tuberculous pleurisy is a delayed-type hypersensitivity immunogenic reaction to a few mycobacterial antigens entering the pleural space rather than direct tissue destruction by mycobacterial proliferation. Although it has been shown that pulmonary tuberculosis induces 18-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) uptake in active lesions, little is known about the applicati...
متن کاملRecurrent Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura-Like Syndrome as a Paraneoplastic Phenomenon in Malignant Peritoneal Mesothelioma: A Case Report and Review of the Literature
We report the case of an African American male with no significant past medical history presenting with recurrent, rapidly relapsing episodes of thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) despite aggressive treatment with several lines of treatment. Incidentally, these episodes were associated with severe abdominal pain which eventually developed into acute abdomen and prompted exploratory lapar...
متن کاملLeft-sided malignant pleural mesothelioma presenting with recurrent pneumothorax 7 years after the right pleuropneumonectomy
Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is an extremely aggressive tumor arising from the pleura with a median survival of approximately 9–12 months. It can rarely present as a spontaneous pneumothorax. We herein reported a 65-year-old female patient with the left-sided MPM presenting with episodes of recurrent spontaneous pneumothorax. She had undergone the right pleuropneumonectomy due to the ri...
متن کاملNon-islet Cell Tumour Hypoglycaemia (NICTH) in Malignant Mesothelioma: Case Report.
Non-islet cell tumour hypoglycaemia (NICTH) is an uncommon but important clinical condition. It can occur in a setting of known malignancy. Here, we report the case of a 56-year-old, non-diabetic, female patient with unresectable malignant pleural mesothelioma who presented with unexplained recurrent hypoglycaemia. Surreptitious use of insulin or other hypoglycaemic agents were ruled out. Inves...
